  5. Run a full 15-minute test before you call it done. Air Dry or Low Heat, then verify the drum spins smoothly, there's no squeal, and the dryer shuts off when the door opens. A 15-minute test now prevents a callback tomorrow.

2. Whirlpool Washer Won't Unlock: Try These Before Replacing Anything

People search "queen washer and dryer" every month, and what they usually mean is: "Will this pair handle my queen-size comforter?" Fair question, because there's no official queen size class for washers. It comes down to drum volume.

In my experience, a washer needs at least 4.5 cubic feet to genuinely clean a queen comforter — the fluffy kind, not the vacuum-packed one. A 4.2 cu ft model will technically fit the comforter, but you get the classic ball-of-wet-linen outcome. The inside never gets properly washed. For a 2-bath home, that's about 10–15 gallons per minute. Undersized units pass hard water at peak times, no matter how fresh the resin is. Look for a softener with a published peak flow rating. NSF/ANSI 44 is the standard that certifies softener efficiency — worth checking for on the spec sheet.
  4. Budget for salt and maintenance. A softener uses roughly 20–50 lbs of salt per month depending on hardness. The resin lasts 10–20 years. If nobody refills the salt, you don't have a softener — you have an expensive pipe. I've seen a brand-new system "fail" after three months of empty brine tank. Set a reminder every month.

5. How to Get a Smart Plug Back Online (Without Losing Your Schedules)

Smart plugs drop offline for the same three reasons, in my experience: WiFi changes, power blips, or a frozen plug. The mistake I keep seeing — and made once myself — is jumping straight to a factory reset. That erases your schedules and scenes when a simple reboot would have fixed it. The reset order matters.

  5. Only now, factory reset. If the LED is still blinking after a router reboot, hold the plug's button for 10–15 seconds until the light flashes a different color, then re-add it in the app. Save your schedules to notes before you do. Last resort, not first step.

Notes From 7 Years of Appliance Mistakes

A few extra lessons that don't fit cleanly into checklists but are too expensive not to pass on:

OEM parts beat universal parts for belts and locks. The $12 universal belt can work fine on one dryer, but when you manage 30+ units, you learn fast: OEM belts have predictable length and tension. Universal belts stretch differently across drum geometries, which means squeals and callbacks. Spending $5 extra per board multiplied by 30 units is far cheaper than 30 second visits.

A dryer that tumbles but doesn't heat is usually a thermal fuse, not a heating element. I once ordered a heating element first. The actual problem was a $12 fuse. If the repair is one of the five checklists above, DIY is worth attempting — the parts are $15–$100 and the process is contained. But if your diagnosis gets beyond a screwdriver and a multimeter — control board errors, wiring shorts, anything gas-related — the diagnostic fee pays for itself. My rule now: attempt DIY once.
